The Story of Ecobricks Vietnam

Dear friends,
I am Thao, a Hoianese.
My small story began in 2022, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. With plenty of free time on my hands, I decided to enroll in a training program with the Global Ecobricks Alliance (GEA). As someone who has always been concerned about the environment but had not yet put that concern into practice in my daily life, I joined simply out of curiosity about what “ecobrick” meant. Initially, I found it seemed feasible and easy to do as a solution for managing plastic waste. However, after six months of training, I realized: “This is not feasible right now, and it is not easy at all.” Living in harmony with nature is far from easy; it requires both heart and vision, willingness and awareness, as well as the right knowledge and attention. So, should I stop here?
The course planted a seed in me, instilling a belief in the need to take action to protect the environment and, consequently, our own lives. As a native of Hoi An, a world-renowned tourist destination, I recognized that the waste problem here mainly stems from single-use, non-recyclable plastics used in tourism. I decided to shift my focus to tourism, specifically to conducting workshops for tourists with the main goal of raising awareness about plastic waste through practical activities. These workshops combine hands-on practice with direct discussions on the issue.
In May 2023, my idea caught the attention of Jack Bartholomew from Mango Tiger company, who sponsored and supported it by bringing in customers. From there, the idea officially became a tourism product and welcomed its first groups of visitors.
After more than a year of official operation, the workshop has reached and positively influenced tourism activities in Hoi An. Although the impact is small, it is a seed that will sprout and bloom in the future. Personally, I have also noticed a significant transformation in my daily life: I live more simply, consume more sparingly, and have switched to cycling. For me, this is crucial, as using plastic is part of modern living. Therefore, only when we recognize the problem, accept it, and truly change, can the root of the issue be resolved.
I will conclude my little story with a favorite quote from my favorite song, We Are the World:
“We can’t go on, pretending day-by-day, that someone, somewhere soon make a change.”
Sincerely, Thao
